High Country News, an award-winning magazine that tells the ongoing story of the modern American West, seeks a new senior member for its editorial team. The associate editor for the West-north desk oversees coverage of myriad issues in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. This includes writing and editing features, in-depth analysis, essays and other journalistic forms, while working as a key leader of the editorial team, shaping the future direction of the magazine, managing coverage of a vast region, and recruiting and developing new talent. Manages an assistant editor and intern/fellow. Reports to editor-in-chief.
Candidates should be highly skilled writers and editors and have a sophisticated understanding of the HCN's core issues—including public land, natural resources, and the environment. They must also understand where these issues intersect with under-represented and under-reported communities and be prepared to develop other topics for HCN to cover. Great story sense is a must. Candidates should also be collaborative and team-oriented and able to contribute to the organization's cultural competence. Must live in or be willing to relocate to a state or tribal nation within the West-north coverage area. HCN is committed to a diverse, inclusive and representative workplace. Starting salary from $45,000 to $52,500, depending on experience.”
